Tout ceci est impossible by Bertrand Carrière
In early 2018, photographer Bertrand Carrière began a residency at the Cinémathèque québécoise. Since his experience as a set photographer, he has developed a close relationship with cinema. This has led to a number of explorations, including Les images-temps, produced between 1997 and 2000. Tout ceci est impossible is a continuation of this work, produced during his residency at the Cinémathèque.
"I've had a multi-layered relationship with cinema for a very long time. As a set photographer, I've long been an observer, in the shadow of the sets, watching the cinema unfold before my eyes. Then, questioning the photographic heritage of cinema, I used the cinematographic camera to divert its use, exploring time and the relationship between fixity and movement.

This new work is now available in book form, co-published by Éditions Somme toute and the Cinémathèque québécoise. The juxtaposition of images and their deployment on the pages make this an exceptional aesthetic object, accompanied by texts by Guillaume Lafleur and Robert Daudelin, as well as an afterword by the artist. In this way, we celebrate Bertrand Carrière's artistic contribution to the art of moving images.
