Serge Clément was born in Valleyfield in 1950. Active as a photographer since 1975, he has devoted himself exclusively to art photography since 1993. His works have been shown in many countries around the world, including Canada, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic, Italy, Syria, China and Japan.

Among his many solo exhibitions should be noted Cité fragile, shown during the Mois de la Photo in Paris (1994), Vertige-Vestige, held at the University of Salamanca in Spain (1998) and the Centre photographique d'Île-de-France (1999), Persona, at Galerie Occurrence in Montréal (2000), Fragrant Light/Parfum de lumière, at The Rotunda, Exchange Square in Hong Kong (2000) and Galerie Simon Blais in Montréal (2001), Au Passage Patience, at the Corkin Gallery in Toronto (2003), Fragments, at the 10 Chancery Lane Gallery in Hong Kong (2010), and Courants ~ contre-courants, at the Musée de la photographie in Charleroi, Belgium (2010).

Clément's work has also been featured in many group exhibitions, including Présence de la photographie dans la collection du Musée du Québec, at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (1995), Photographie au présent, at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris (1998), Streetwalk, at the OP Fotogallery in Hong Kong (1998), Untitled, at Galerie Simon Blais (1999), The Frame, the Setting and the Site, at the Centro de la imagen in Mexico City (2000), Art Basel/Miami, with the Corkin Gallery of Toronto (2003), Branching Out, at the Sepia International Gallery/The Alkazi Collection of Photography in New York (2007), and Chemin faisant, at Galerie Simon Blais (2009).

Following the publication of the first book of his photographs (Cité fragile, 1992), he has explored means of expression ranging from the classically documentary (Halloween, 1997) to expressionist installations (Persona, 2000; Parfum de lumière, 2004), as well as poetic narratives (Vertige Vestige, 1998), urban views (Fragrant Light, 2000; Sutures—Berlin 2000–2003, 2003) and, once again, books of photographs (Courants ~ contre-courants, 2007).

Serge Clément has been the recipient of many grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, including one in 2007 to take up an artist's residency at the Québec Studio in New York. His works can be found in many public and private collections both in Canada and abroad.
