Ann Hamilton

Born in Lima, Ohio, in 1956, Ann Hamilton is an internationally renowned visual artist known for her large-scale multimedia installations, public artworks, and artistic collaborations. She represented the United States at the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree with a major in textiles from the University of Kansas (1979) and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree from Yale University (1985). From 1985 to 1991, she taught at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Since 2001, Ann Hamilton has held a chair at Ohio University as Professor Emeritus in the Department of Art. She is best known for her monumental temporary installations, which create immersive experiences, encouraging viewers to rethink the body and the spaces it occupies.

Among her many honors, Hamilton has received the National Medal of Arts, the Heinz Award, the MacArthur Fellowship, the United States Artists Fellowship, the NEA Visual Arts Fellowship, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, the Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture, and the Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. She represented the United States at the São Paulo Biennial in 1991. She is currently a member of the board of directors of the Wexner Center for the Arts, the American Academy in Rome, United States Artists, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
