Michel Campeau wins Duke and Duchess of York Prize in Photography from the Canada Council for the Arts
The Duke and Duchess of York Prize in Photography was established by the Canadian government in 1986 through an endowment to the Canada Council of $170,000. The prize is given to the most outstanding visual artist working in photography, as selected by a peer assessment committee from among all those awarded a Canada Council visual arts project grant.

Marie-Claude Bouthillier asked 23 contemporary artists to take part in the creation of the major arcana (the 22 allegorical cards) of the new Tarot, passing its symbols and illustrations through the filter of their artistic practice. Le Tarot de Montréal is a collective tarot, and its name refers to the Tarot de Marseille. It brings together the work of Mathieu Beauséjour, Benoit Bourdeau, Eric Simon, Eve K. Montreal, March 9, 2010 – The winners of the 2010 Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts were announced by the Canada Council for the Arts today at the Cinémathèque québécoise in Montreal.

painter Rita Letendre, video artist Tom Sherman, photographer
Gabor Szilasi and painter Claude Tousignant won the awards for artistic achievement. Glass sculptor Ione Thorkelsson won the Saidye Bronfman Award for excellence in fine crafts, while Terry Ryan received the Outstanding Contribution Award as long-time general manager of West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative in Cape Dorset, Nunavut and director of Dorset Fine Arts in Toronto.
