Blue brings together recent prints from Catherine Farish. Since her 2011 exhibition Notes, the Montréal printmaker has explored the recurring motif of paper player piano rolls. She now combines them, however, with another music storage medium—recording tape. Building on her previous experiments, Farish uses drypoint and embossing techniques to print fragments and layers of audio tape to harmonize with the repetitive perforations of piano rolls. What results are works that are unique insofar as they are created with nine different printing plates randomly superimposed on one another. And although they vary, these prints are all variations on the colour blue.
