Serge Clément was born in Valleyfield, Quebec, in 1950 and has been active as a photographer since 1975. His work has been shown in many different countries, including Canada, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, Syria, China and Japan.His solo exhibitions include Itinéraires 1987–1992 at the Mois de la photo in Montreal (1993), Cité Fragile at the Mois de la Photo in Paris (1994), Halloween 1995 at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto (1996), and Vertige-Vestige at the University of Salamanca in Spain (1998); the Île-de-France Photography Centre in France (1999), Persona at the Occurrence Gallery in Montreal (2000), Fragrant Light at the Rotonde-Exchange Square in Hong Kong (2000), and Galerie Simon Blais in Montreal (2001). He has participated in numerous group shows, including La collection: tableau inaugural at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (1992), Travel Journals at the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography in Ottawa (1994), Présence de la photographie dans la collection du Musée du Québec at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (1995), Photographie au présent at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris (1998), Streetwalk at the OP Fotogallery in Hong Kong (1998), Untitled at Galerie Simon Blais (1999) and The Frame, the Setting and the Site at the Centro de la imagen in Mexico (2000). His books and monographs include: Cité fragile, Vox Populi, Montreal, 1992; Halloween 95, Montreal, Québec, Les éditions 400 coups, Montreal, 1997; Vertige-Vestige, Les éditions 400 coups, Montreal, 1998; and Fragrant Light, Tilly-Blaru Editions, Hong Kong, 2000. Some of Clément's work can be seen in collections at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, the Heritage Museum in Hong Kong, the Musée de la photographie in Charleroi, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec in Quebec City, and the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. In 2007, Serge Clément was granted residency at the Studio du Québec in NYC for six months by the Canada Council for the Arts.
