Denis Juneau was born in Verdun on September 30, 1925, the third in a family of five children. Between 1942 and 1943, he studied art at the Monument National with Jean Benoît, the renowned surrealist painter. In 1943, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal where, until 1950, he was taught by such artists as Sylvia Daoust, Armand Filion, Alfred Laliberté and Alfred Pellan. Between 1951 and 1954, Juneau was part of a circle of artists that included Claude Gauvreau, Jean Goguen, Fernand Leduc, Guido Molinari, Fernande Saint-Martin and Claude Tousignant. During the same period, he undertook a two-year internship in goldsmithing; first as an apprentice with Georges Delrue (1951-1952), then as a designer under Gilles Beaugrand (1952-1953), both of whom were goldsmiths. He studied industrial design from 1954 to 1956 at the Centro Studi Arte Industria in Novara, Italy. In 1956, the opening of the Galerie Denyse Delrue provided the occasion for Juneau's participation in his first group exhibition, while the same gallery was the setting for his first solo show, in 1958.
In 1959, Juneau took part, along with Louis Belzile, Jean Goguen, Fernand Leduc, Guido Molinari, Claude Tousignant and Fernand Toupin, in the Art abstrait show held at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, an exhibition which would prove decisive for his career. In the following years, Juneau's work was frequently shown in Montreal, as well as New York, Spoleto (Italy), Washington, Paris, London, Brussels and Ottawa, where he was given a solo exhibition in 1987 at the National Gallery of Canada. Most recently, in 2001-2002, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec organized Ponctuations, a major retrospective of Juneau's work, accompanied by a colour monograph.
