BERTRAND CARRIÈRE

Born in Ottawa in 1957, Bertrand Carrière studied graphic design at Ahuntsic College in Montreal from 1978 through 1979. He obtained his Master's degree at UQAM in 1996. Between 1980 and 1995, he worked as a stage photographer for numerous movie productions. Since 1992, he has taught photography at André Laurendeau College.

His solo exhibitions in Quebec include Dazibao and numerous Maisons de la Culture in Montreal; Centre Vu and the Musée de la Civilisation in Quebec City. Elsewhere in Canada, his work was shown in Ottawa, Winnipeg, Toronto and Calgary. Bertrand Carrière has also presented his work in France at the Espace St-Cyprien in Toulouse; at the Festival du Cinéma Québécois in Blois; at the 6th Rencontres Cinématographiques in Cannes; and at the Librairie du Québec in Paris.

He has taken part in many group shows in Canada and aboard, including Six photographes québécois at Galerie Différence in Toulouse, France; Un si grand âge at the Musée de la civilisation in Quebec City; Alliances... la famille and De la collection... Portraits at the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography in Ottawa; Scene from Behind at the Sarah Morthland Gallery in New York; and Les Images-Temps at Galerie Occurrence and Galerie Simon Blais in Montreal.

Bertrand Carrière has also published four books: Témoin de l’ombre photographies de tournage (1995), Voyage à domicile (1997), Signes de jour (2002) and Dieppe: paysages et installations (2005).

His work is part of many major public and private collections, including the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography in Ottawa; the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec in Quebec City; the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal; Air Canada; and the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris. He has received many grants from the Cultural Affairs departments of the Quebec and Canadian governments.
